Gift Sets: Fun Foals, Part I - They Travel in Packs
2000 was an exciting year for Stablemate fans. This was the year brand new Stablemate foals was announced - four of them no less! The new foals were released in four Mare and Foal sets and as a Fun Foal Gift Set.
#5655 Stablemates Fun Foal Gift Set - 6 Pieces contained one each of the new molds and one each of the G1 Thoroughbred Foals:
- G1 Thoroughbred Standing Foal - Bay frame overo
- G1 Thoroughbred Lying Foal - "Smokey dun"
- G2 Cantering Foal - Buckskin blanket appaloosa
- G2 Scrambling Foal - Dark bay
- G2 Scratching Foal - Chestnut
- G2 Trotting Foal - Black
This set was only available through 2000, by 2001 it had changed slightly.
Those with a sharp eye would notice that the Fun Foal set was missing something in 2001 - the "Smokey Dun" G1 Thoroughbred Lying Foal was gone. The set was renamed #5994 Stablemates Fun Foal Gift Pack and was discontinued at the end of the year.
2002 brought collectors a new assortment of Fun Foals. #5982 Stablemates Fun Foals Gift Pack, like the 2001 set contained five foals:
- G1 Thoroughbred Standing Foal - "Dusty dun"
- G2 Cantering Foal - Black
- G2 Scrambling Foal - Bay Tobiano
- G2 Scratching Foal - Palomino
- G2 Trotting Foal - Bay blanket appaloosa
This set remained the same from 2002 through 2005, though in the 2005 catalogue the G1 Thoroughbred Standing Foal was marked with an asterisk "A Hagen Renaker Design". Before the end of 2005, that foal would be gone.
Around the end of 2005, all Hagen Renaker models in the Breyer line would suddenly be whisked away, to be replaced by a look-alike on a Breyer-owned mold; the Stablemate Sets were not immune to the Copyright Rapture. Though the replacement happened in 2005, the catalogues would not reflect the change until the new ones were printed in 2006.
The other foals remained the same, but the G1 Thoroughbred Standing Foal in the #5982 Stablemates Fun Foals Gift Pack was replaced by a G2 Trotting Foal in the same "Dusty Dun" colour. The text in the catalogue now called this colour "brown dun", but the text referring to the model as the standing foal had not been changed. The set was discontinued all together at the end of 2006 to be replaced with a completely new set in 2007.

The Fun Foal collections continued as well as the adult sets; the G3 Foals filled the holes left by the G1 Thoroughbred Foals
#5972 Stablemates Fun Foals 5-Piece Gift Pack was released in 2007 and was available through 2008. The set contained G2 and G3 molds:
- G3 Standing Foal - Chestnut tobiano
- G2 Cantering Foal - Black leopard appaloosa
- G2 Scrambling Foal - Shaded bay
- G2 Scratching Foal - Chestnut
- G2 Trotting Foal - Bay
#5977 Stablemates 5-Piece Fun Foals replaced the #5972 in 2009 and was produced through 2010. It contained a mix of G2 and G3 molds:
- G2 Cantering Foal - Chestnut sabino
- G2 Scrambling Foal - Black blanket appaloosa
- G2 Scratching Foal - Bay tobiano
- G2 Trotting Foal - Flaxen chestnut
- G3 Standing Foal - Palomino
#6127 Stablemates Fun Foals Gift Pack was sold through K-Mart stores in 2008 and can be rather difficult to find.
- G3 Standing Foal - Bay blanket
- G2 Cantering Foal - Black tobiano
- G2 Scrambling Foal - Palomino with a blue eye
- G2 Scratching Foal - Dark chestnut
- G2 Trotting Foal - Chestnut roan
